The Broad Hinton Allotments were set up in 2008, we have 26 plots leased from the Horton family on an annual basis. The Parish Council are responsible for the allotments but a management committee Chair (Adrian Rudler) Vice Chair (Sue Robinson) Secretary (Martin Heal) and Treasurer (Chris Horan) run the day-to-day organisation. The current cost of a plot is £10.00 per annum.
Originally many plots changed hands and we had several empty plots that resulted in extra work for the remaining allotment holders to keep the vacant plots tidy and weed free. Currently we have a stable core of allotment holders who have managed their plots for many years, some from the outset. In 2021 two plots changed hands to people that had been on the waiting list for less than one year. In 2022 we have one person on the waiting list.
The allotment group are a friendly bunch who are always on hand to offer advice to the novice gardener. We grow a variety of different vegetables, fruit and flowers, from staples such as potatoes, onions, carrots and beans, to asparagus, artichokes and pumpkins. There are numerous fruits; strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. More people are now growing cut flowers for their homes.
